The challenge

Lancaster Spirits Company launched in July 2024 with more than 200 casks already laid down. As a small-batch single malt distillery competing with much larger producers, efficiency mattered from day one.

The team needed a system that could support production tracking, maturation management, and HMRC duty reporting without creating more admin. It also needed to support the business as it grew.

Lancaster also sells private casks to customers in multiple markets, and those customers expect clear visibility of their cask. A paper certificate was never going to be enough.

The solution

Proof 8 was embedded into the business from the outset. It supports day-to-day production, duty reporting, and Digital Deeds for every cask via QR code.

Each stage of the spirit's journey is recorded, from the barley, yeast, and water used, through brewing and distilling, and into the cask itself. That creates a clear record of provenance to support compliance and customer transparency.

The team can also access the system from any device, which makes active cask management more practical for a growing distillery with a small team.

The outcome

Lancaster Spirits can now give private cask owners digital visibility of where their cask is, what is in it, and how it is maturing. That has become a meaningful part of the distillery's offer.

The integration with HMRC has reduced the time spent preparing duty reports and lowered accounting overhead, giving the team more time to focus on production and customer experience.
