Jackton Distillery

A new-generation Scottish distillery using Digital Deeds to tackle cask fraud

Concerns over cask investment fraud continue to ripple through the whisky industry, and we knew we had to do things differently. A piece of paper can be replicated a thousand times. A Digital Deed cannot.

Jaynie Kean, Managing Director, Jackton Distillery

The challenge

Jackton Distillery, home of the award-winning Raer Scotch Whisky, entered the industry with a clear ambition: to build a new generation of distillery that could compete on craft and transparency. But their existing systems were holding them back. Tracking a single cask meant navigating three or four different spreadsheets, and a single cask movement could take a full working day.

As a young distillery building a private cask buyer programme, the stakes around trust and provenance were especially high. Cask investment fraud was a growing concern across the industry, and paper certificates offered no real protection. The team knew that if they were going to ask people to invest in their whisky, they needed to offer something more dependable.

Previous stock management systems had also failed them. None understood the specific demands of Scotch — a product that matures over years, moves between locations, depletes, and is closely monitored by HMRC. The rigour they put into production was not being matched by the systems around it.

The solution

Proof 8 was embedded into the operation from the outset. Every cask is assigned a Digital Deed as soon as it arrives on site or is filled, creating an immediate and permanent record of its origin, ownership, ABV, location, and movement history. Each cask carries a QR code that any team member or cask owner can scan to see the full picture in real time.

Production data is captured on handheld devices directly on the distillery floor. The Head of Operations uses the platform to allocate tasks and send jobs to team members, while distillers log ABV readings and other measurements without leaving their workstation. The Managing Director starts each day with a customisable dashboard that gives an at-a-glance view of the entire operation.

Proof 8's direct HMRC integration was also central to the decision. Monthly duty reporting, previously a six-hour process, now takes around one hour. The platform handles the complex requirements of WOWGR compliance automatically, removing a significant administrative burden from a small and growing team.

The outcome

The results have been immediate and measurable. Cask management admin is down more than 75%. What previously required three people can now be handled by one person on a single system. Tasks that once took a full working day now take under an hour, freeing the equivalent of two full-time team members to focus on production, customers, and innovation.

For private cask owners, the Digital Deed has become a meaningful part of the Jackton offer. Buyers anywhere in the world can scan their cask's QR code and see exactly what is in it, where it is, and how it is maturing — right down to the origin of the barley. One cask owner filled his cask on the day his son was born; the family can follow every step of that journey in real time until the cask is bottled at age 18.

As Jackton Distillery prepares for the release of its first Raer Single Malt in September 2026 and continues to scale its warehouse and cask buyer community, Proof 8 provides the operational foundation to grow without losing control. Full traceability, leaner admin, and a stronger proposition for the people who believe in what they are building.
